It has been a long time. A very long time indeed. It’s been a long time since I had to sleep without a comforter. Even in summer, it’s hard for me to take off my hoodie because it isn’t always hot and I’d rather be sweating than freezing. Just a few days ago, my coworkers were laughing about the fact that I was wearing my hoodie in 32 degrees. It usually takes me a long time to start feeling hot. But these days, it has been so hot that you could be typing this article while sweating and drinking refrigerated water. It’s definitely something I haven’t experienced in a long time.
It has been around 35C in the last few days. I cannot recall experiencing this much heat in my life since 10 years ago when I left India. Yesterday was the first time in 10 years that I had to throw away my comforter and sleep with a bed sheet over me. It reminded of the days when we used to sleep on the roof with a cooler directed towards all of us. I used to put the bed sheet over my head so the mosquitos won’t bite and the cool air from the cooler used to move the sheet up and down, touching my face and lulling me to sleep like a mother’s lullaby. I remember falling asleep quite instantly. Today, even though the environment was the same, the heat was the same, something was different. It was me. I could not fall asleep as easily as I used to be able to when I was a child.
To those summer memories, let’s never say goodbye.
